With features like invoicing, deeper reporting, multi-user access, and more expense tracking, Essentials provides extra tools for your business to grow.

Upgrading from Self-Employed to Essentials is quick and easy. Here's a step-by-step guide to making the switch:

Back Up Your Self-Employed Account

Before making any changes, do a manual backup of your Self-Employed account. This ensures none of your data is lost in the upgrade process.

To do a manual backup:

  1. Sign in to QB Self-Employed

  2. Go to the Exports page under the Reports menu

  3. Select the Accounting tab

  4. Choose Export my data

  5. Export data as both a .qbo and .csv file

  6. Save the backup files in a secure location

Having this backup guarantees you have copies of your self-employment data if needed.

Sign Up for QuickBooks Essentials

Now it's time to sign up for a paid Essentials subscription.

  1. Visit QuickBooks.Intuit.com

  2. Click Try it Free under the Essentials plan

  3. Select Apply Promo Code during signup

  • Enter promo code UPGRADE for a discount

  1. Fill in your basic business info to create the account

After signing up with your info, you will have a new Essentials account ready to connect your data into.

Import Your Self-Employed Data

With your new account created, you can easily import all existing Self-Employed data in a few clicks.

  1. Open the Essentials product

  2. Click on the Import module on the home dashboard

  3. When prompted select QuickBooks Self-Employed as the data source

  4. Click through the import wizard to transfer data

  5. Confirm the import preview looks accurate

  6. Complete the import process

Once finished, review transactions, invoices, reports and more to verify accuracy. At this point your Self-Employed data is now available in your new Essentials account, with no duplication of data.

And that's it! Those simple steps will upgrade your QuickBooks 2024 subscription from Self-Employed to Essentials. You'll now enjoy more users, accounting features, integrations and customizations for your business.
